Crosscall: Android outdoor smartphones

Founded in 2009, Crosscall makes smartphones designed for outdoor activities. Its core target market includes sports and outdoor enthusiasts and people working in the field and on-site. The Android operating system allows Crosscall to concentrate on developing the hardware with which to win over new markets.

Cyril Vidal created the Crosscall brand as he was tired of experiencing breakages and oxidation when he used his mobile outdoors. Cyril’s background is in the construction and steel industries, and he loves jet skiing and wakeboarding. He began developing tough, waterproof, durable mobile phones that could keep up with his lifestyle.

Today, Crosscall offers a wide range of really tough, waterproof mobile phones and smartphones developed using Android. “With Android in general and Google in particular, we have a reliable operating system that allows us to focus on developing our products” explains David Eberlé, Vice-President and partner at Crosscall. Most of all, Crosscall values the Android community. “Android has a large following. Building our device for such a well-known system also helped to make us a success” explains Cyril Vidal, the company’s President and founder. “Android is open, flexible and transparent, making it an operating system that perfectly reflects our own values.” We also developed a native X3-Sensors app that’s embedded into our smartphones and available from the Play Store”.

The company now employs 85 people. It has sold over one million devices to date and has doubled its revenues every year for the last four years: Crosscall has been incredibly successful. “We now want to expand our target market and continue our development internationally – we currently have a presence in 10 different European countries. Our aim is to keep growing while preserving our core identity.”
