Greenroom helps teachers behind the scenes
Greenroom is an online community for Computer Science teachers who are using Greenfoot. It was founded in 2011 and built up with yearly grants from the Google CS4HS programme. Greenfoot is widely used in schools across more than 80 countries to teach programming to beginners from the age of 13 years and up, using Java or Stride as its programming language. Teachers who may lack formal training in Computer Science can use Greenroom to access a wealth of resources and engage in discussions with their peers. Michael Kolling, Professor at the University of Kent and Project Lead at Greenroom says: “What makes all the difference for education systems to be successful is the availability and quality of the resources and support available for teaching. Google’s support has enabled us to create and maintain Greenroom, where more than 4,000 teachers have signed up to share resources and tips, ask questions and discuss their teaching methods. It makes a huge difference in teachers’ work and is crucial to the success of our community.” Teachers can use the materials available to create their own projects, tailored specifically to the needs of their students. Additionally, in the event of a problem, teachers and Computer Science specialists are on hand to offer support.
