Saferinternet.gr | Raising awareness about online safety for young people

Saferinternet.gr and Google use storytelling to promote Internet child safety in Greece

Saferinternet.gr raises awareness about safe ways to use the Internet for young people across Greece, as part of the European Commission’s Better Internet for Kids programme. Run by the Greek Safer Internet Centre, the site provides information for both children and parents through fun and creative campaigns. One such initiative is The Internet Farm, which uses a children’s book and interactive theatre play to educate primary and pre-school kids on how best to use the Web. Saferinternet.gr teamed up with Google to create and run the campaign, which has travelled across Greece and includes face-to-face and digital workshops for children and informative lectures for parents, grandparents and teachers. The play takes place on a farm with a difference – the animals surf the Web! The story follows a pig, a hen and some geese as they come up against common pitfalls online, such as revealing too much personal information and talking to strangers. Luckily a wise owl and the kids are there to save the day. “We've used art to help children discover the wonderful world of the Internet and learn how to use it safely – and they love it,” says Dr. Veronika Samara, Coordinator of the Greek Safer Internet Centre. Highly acclaimed by teachers and parents and supported by the Greek Ministry of Education, The Internet Farm has reached nearly 45,000 young people and 4,000 adults.
